As an architectural complex, Leal Senado Square, named after Leal Senado (today’s Municipal Council), has always been the centre of Macau, as well as an important venue for gatherings and celebrations. In the past, whenever a Portuguese governor of Macau came to office, he would review his navy and army here. Today, numerous festive activities and celebrations are held here all the year round.
Most of the buildings and houses around the square were constructed towards the end of the 19th century. Many of them are classified monuments or buildings of great architectural value, such as the “Leal Senado”Building, the General Post Office Building and the Holy House of Mercy. They all have neo-classical façades, lending a certain uniformity and harmony to the square as a whole.
